Glossary of Terms and Words used throughout this Web Site.

To help you understand the Terminology and commonly used Words relating to Emperor Scorpions and the keeping of them, here you will find a Glossary of  Terminology and Words relating to them. It is as yet incomplete and more is to be added in time.

Aculeus:

The point at the end of the Telson/Stinger section.


Arachnida:

A large class of arthropods that are mostly air-breathing by means of trachea or book lungs, that include the spiders and scorpions, mites, and ticks, and that have a segmented body divided into two regions of which the anterior bears four pairs of legs but no antennae.

Arid:

Lacking moisture, especially having insufficient rainfall to support trees or woody plants: an arid climate.
 


Arboreal / Arboreous:

While this is mainly related to Tree dwelling Scorpions, it means pertaining to Trees or to be Tree like. Arboreous would indicate a Tree Dwelling animal or species.


Arthropods:

Invertebrate animals of the phylum Arthropoda, including Arachnids, Crustaceans, Insects and myriapods. Generally referring to Creatures that are defined by having an Exo Skeleton with segmented bodies and paired articulated jointed limbs/appendages.


Book Lungs:

Scorpions have 4 pairs of Book Lungs which they breathe through.  As their name indicates, they are folded like a book.

Carapace:
In arachnids, the carapace or peltidium is formed by the fusion of prosomal tergites into a single plate which carries the eyes, ocularium, ozopores (a pair of openings of the scent gland of Opiliones) and diverse phaneres. In a few orders, such as Solifugae and Schizomida it may be subdivided.

Carnivore:

Flesh eating, eater of Flesh.


Chela:

Pincers or Pedipalps, the front set of limbs used for gripping things with which give Scorpions one of their most recognised features.


Chelicerae:

Pincer like mouth parts that are very articulate.


CITES Listed:

Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.  More about CITES via Wikipedia


Colony:

2 or more Scorpions sharing the same enclosure or living space where the can interact with each other.


Exoskeleton / Exo Skeleton:

Cuticle or outer shell like case. Tough outer "skin" that protects the inhabitant.


Faunarium:

Is a Plastic Terrarium.


Genital Operculum:

Genital operculum covers the reproductive organs of the scorpions (genital orifice of females). In the male, the genital operculum is completely separate. A pair of genital papillae may protrude from the posterior part of the operculum for males of some species.


Gravid:

A pregnant Female Scorpion.


Humidity:

Humidity is the amount of water in the air.
Water exists in three different forms:
liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam).
Humidity refers to the quantity of water in its gaseous form,
or water vapour, that is in the air.

Indigenous:

Native of a Place or Area, place of origin.


Instar:

Stage of development of a Scorpion, new born/Scorplings are 1st Instar, their first Molt/Moult would take them into their 2nd Instar stage.


Invertebrates:

A Creature with no backbone.


Metasoma:

The main part of the "Tail" of a Scorpion.


Molt/Moult:

Shedding of the outer Exo Skeleton/Skin/Shell.


Nocturnal:

A creature that lives primarily at night time and hides or sleeps during daylight hours.


Papillae:

A small nipple like projection.


Peat:

Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter.

Pectines:

A body structure or organ resembling a comb.

Pedipalps:

Chela or Pincers, the front set of limbs used for gripping things with, these are one of a Scorpions most recognised features.


Sclerotization:

The hardening of a Scorpions Exoskeleton after a Molt/Moult.


Scorplings:

Scorpion young, baby scorpions.


Substrate:

They type of surface or covering to be used for your Scorpions Enclosure, such as Peat or Vemiculite.


Telson:

The Stinger, part of the Scorpions tail containing the Sting section.


Terrarium:

A small enclosure or closed container in which selected living plants and sometimes small land animals,
such as turtles and lizards, are kept and observed.

Terrestrial:

Living on or in the ground; not aquatic, arboreal, or aerial.  One that lives on the land, as opposed to in water or in the trees.


Vivarium:

An enclosed area/Enclosure that can contain an ecosystem to sustain Plants or Creatures not usually native to the place they are being kept. This can be either in the form of a Glass or Plastic tank type, or a mesh structure through to a Wooden Hybrid of the previous materials. It can be used to support or house many types of creatures or fauna.


Viviparous:

A Creature that gives birth to live young.
